As the New Year approaches I reflect on the inspiration closer to home

As the new year approaches I thought about the focus of this blog. I created the blog to highlight various women of color who are making strides, pushing the envelope and exude strength becoming beacons of hope for our young ladies coming up behind them. I often call out women who are celebrities, authors, writers, film makers, artists, musicians, etc. Well I also need to point out that there are usually these very same women within our own families. These magnificent women are often missed and mistaken. It could be the great-grandmother who helped raise you when you rmother faught through college to make a better life for her family, or the aunt who provided a nurturing environment looking after not just her own children but also encouraging her niece, or a sister who constantly shows support and lends an ear during times of strain. The cousins who push to find ways to better their lives and shine their beacon of light on those around them. All these women are blessings in my own life and hopefully you can recall some of those ladies in your own life.

CNN Hero Andrea Ivory

As I tucked myself into bed in the wee hours of the morning I caught CNN heroes which re-aired on CNN Christmas night. As sleepy as I was (and I mean sleepy as hell after writing half the night), I still managed to keep my eyelids open long enough to truly appreciate this story. This women is the truth. She had been diagnosed with breast cancer herself, now 5 years cancer free. She spends her time helping women sign up for free mammograms and has visited more than 20,000 homes. She focuses on helping those living in "forgotten" communities. Her organization is called The Florida Breast health initiative http://www.flbreasthealth.com/. She has helped over 600 women thus far. As I viewed the close of this program and listened to the winner of the year speak I realized my goals for 2010 were even more challenging for me in a great way. One of my many goals is to challenge myself to give more of myself in an abundance to help others towards their greatness.

These women inspire me to stop complaining, handle my business, and survive another day. Just when I am ready to be lazier than my BFF's cat, I recognize the struggle in many of the sisters today and how they pushed through. Generally our history, our beautiful and ugly past shapes us into what we are destined to become. This blog will be the dedication. The history of black men and mostly women who fought through the terrors bestowed upon them to inspire the future generations.
and without further ado my fav picks for female girl power & inspiration

Woman Held in Hawaii After Michelle Obama Threat-Fox News article

I read this article and thought I was seeing things. First death threats against the president and now the misses. Go figure. I should not be too surprised. Much worse has occured when it comes to blacks in America. A threat and only a threat is something much kinder than an actual force of action committed. Read for yourself. http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2009/12/22/woman-held-hawaii-michelle-obama-threat/?test=latestnews
And thing is this woman was a few miles from the home where the President and his lovely family was expected to stay at in Hawaii. Not a surprise he cancelled his Chirstmas vacation to remain in Washington 'just in case'. hmmm reminds me of the times I stayed on at the office or went back to work although I was terribly ill to 'get the job done'. Basically my feelings were I might have been picking up the slack that was left from the 'I don't feel like it workers'. Go figure.
